    : The Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, established to aid developing countries that are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, is meeting this week in an international effort to get the Fund operational and recognised as a financial institution within the world bank system, ahead of COP29 the World Climate Summit to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The fund will help small island states and others with funding for climate resilience.

    : Queen Salote College made their debut in the annual Japanese Speech Competition for schools, and won two first prizes for the form 4 and 5 levels. The contest was held at the St. Andrew High School Hall on Friday 13 September. Seven schools in Tonga are now teaching the Japanese language.

    : Twelve new vehicles, worth nearly $1 million pa'anga, were handed over to the Tongan government by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tonga, HE Mr. Liu Weimin, at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre yesterday, 18 September 2024. The eight pickup trucks and four mini buses were received by Hon. Fekitamoeloa ‘Utoikamanu for the government.

    : Wednesday, 18 September 2024, is a significant day in Oceania football when, for the first time in history, two teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2025, to be played in Morocco. The qualifiers will be the winners of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship semi-finals - first Samoa vs New Caledonia, second New Zealand vs Tonga. Soane Mailangi, Tonga head coach, said, “Our team is feeling excited and focused as we prepare for the semifinal against the mighty New Zealand. We know it’s going to be a tough match, but the players are determined and ready to give their best. There’s a sense of pride and belief among the team, knowing we’ve worked hard to reach this stage.”

    : The Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS), an organization dedicated to helping thousands of vulnerable people in Tonga, now needs a little help itself, to escape increasing floodwaters around the termite-ridden buildings in Nuku'alofa that it has worked in for decades. TRCS Secretary General, Sione Taumoefolau, told Matangi Tonga that they are organizing a fundraising ball on 22 November, to start raising funds toward constructing a new service centre that will cost around $15-16 million.

    : A global SOS on sea level rise was issued by the UN Secretary General António Guterres today in Tonga, at the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting, calling all world leaders to lead a fast and fair phase-out of fossil fuels. “A worldwide catastrophe is putting this Pacific paradise in peril,” said Guterres.“Global average sea levels are rising at an unprecedented rate. The ocean is overflowing.”

    : South West Pacific Heads of Maritime Forces (SWPHMF) met Wednesday in an exclusive meeting in Nuku’alofa, held at the Leadership Center, Masefield Naval Base. Tonga's CMDR Taniela Tuita said the 14 heads of the maritime forces will share knowledge, skills and action plans. Sitting alongside the Pacific Islands maritime forces leaders, are Australia's Chief of Navy, VADM Mark Hammond and New Zealand's Acting Chief of Navy, CDRE Andrew Brown. “We know each other. We are partnering nations, that's the first thing," said CDRE Brown.

    : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marks its 35th anniversary on Monday 16 September 2024 with an audited net profit of $35 million as its twin milestones.  The $35.8 million profit in 2024 is 75 percent higher than last year’s 2023 record profit of $20 million. Following the NRBT Board approval of the KPMG Fiji external audited NRBT Annual Financial Statements for the financial year ended 30 June 2024, Lord Sevele ‘o Vailahi chairman of the Board at the NRBT 2024 Annual General Meeting today presented a cheque of $25.1 million to the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku as its annual distribution of the Bank’s profits.

    : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) released its Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) for August 2024 following its approval by the Board of Directors. In collaboration with Government and other relevant stakeholders, the NRBT is introducing new financing instruments such as a concessional credit facility and a partial credit guarantee scheme to boost private sector financing towards stronger growth recovery in 2025, particularly fostering access to financing for underserved and climate change-vulnerable sectors.
